May 25 is National Senior Health and Fitness Day. It is always held on the last Wednesday in May. I have read about some amazing seniors who are active even as centenarians. One woman still runs, another rides horses, and a man golfs. Forbes printed some advice from active centenarians. Their advice includes acting younger than your age, eating well, exercising, having faith, maintaining good relationships with family and friends, and keeping a positive attitude.

Becoming a healthy and fit senior begins with healthy habits early in life. According to Mayo Clinic, exercise helps control weight, combats health conditions and diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, and promotes better sleep. A minimum of thirty minutes of physical exercise a day is the goal Mayo recommends.

Make physical exercise a part of your day. Play with your children, walk your dog, take the stairs, park farther away or walk to do your errands, mow the lawn or do some gardening, vacuum or sweep, scrub floors or wash windows, take a dip in the pool. Be sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise.

Don’t forget to exercise your brain too. Memorize something, try a new game or sport, take a class, do the math in your head, learn a foreign language, try an activity that uses your fine-motor skills, eat an unfamiliar food, meditate, take a different route, change your routine. Focus on the good things in your life. Practice gratitude.
